"Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe and take for granted, nor to find talk and discourse, but to weigh and consider."
-Francis Bacon

Conrad's column is written by - well, Conrad, of course. Or Coenraad, if you prefer the official, and not quite so international spelling.

Conrad, who was born in 1959, is not a professional columnist, but does write professionally - he's a translator, and an interpreter. Normally he just translates or interprets other people's words. But his Internet-enthusiasm and the idea of making his own ideas and experiences available to the world, lead to an Internet column. His varied background and different activities as a licensed, qualified and sworn interpreter/translator, part-time web text expert and webmaster, and life in his family - with a wife, three children, a dog and two cats - provide him with lots of material to write about.

Although Conrad, who lives on the European continent, tends to present things from a typical, practical European perspective, his love of the English language adds an essential international flavour. (In)famous for being a fanatical Anglophile, he loves going to English-speaking countries, is fond of going to North-America, but his heart is in Britain - and especially in Wales. (Nothing against England, though.) Several years in the United Kingdom have somehow convinced him that British cars have the steering wheel on the right side (no, not just the "right-hand side", but "right side" - which, in this case, just happens to be the same...), that there really is such a thing as British "cuisine", and that football is played by kicking the ball with ... you guessed: the foot, and that there is no reason whatsoever to call football soccer (since what the Americans call football has very little to do with kicking the ball with your feet).

In Conradīs Column, you can read his unvarnished comments on life and other people, be amazed by his fanatical love of everything British, enjoy his culinary criticism, and look at the books he recommends on the subjects he writes about. (And, if youīre curious to know: No, he hasnīt read them all himself, but has carefully selected them for you to read. He couldnīt read them all, because there wouldnīt be any time left for him to write this column!)

You are quite welcome to read about Conrad's experiences and ideas here on columnar.com. And do mail Conrad and tell him what you think of his writings - especially if you like them! ;-)
